PORT ORCHARD, Wash. — The Kitsap County Fire Marshal, in coordination with the Kitsap County Fire Chiefs Association, announces that the Stage 2 ban on all recreational fires is lifted effective immediately. A Stage 1 ban on general outdoor burning remains in effect.
Recreational fires are small cooking or recreational fires using wood, charcoal, or other solid fuels in developed fire pits and appliances. This does not include general outdoor burning that will require a burning permit. All outdoor burning permits remain suspended.
The decision follows recent rainfall and increased humidity that has increased moisture levels in fuels, lowering the risk of fire spread.
“Recent rains have provided some relief to parched conditions just enough to allow recreational burning. General burning likely will remain prohibited for several more weeks,” said Kitsap County Fire Marshal, David Lynam. “The fuels are damp on the surface but still very dry inside, so extra caution when burning is needed.”
Current Outdoor Burning Rules & Guidelines
A Stage 1 ban on general outdoor burning remains in effect. All outdoor burning except for small cooking and recreational fires remain prohibited. All burning permits are suspended.
Recreational fires are now allowed subject to the following conditions:
- Fires are limited to those for cooking or recreational activities.
- Fuels are limited to wood, charcoal, or processed fire logs.
- Fires must be in a portable fireplace, designated fire area in parks and campgrounds, or developed fire pits.
- Recreational fires must be at least 25 feet from structures or combustible materials like brush of tall grass that would let fire spread.
- Fires may not exceed three feet in diameter.
- Fires must be attended at all times until fully extinguished.
- A shovel, water supply, and tools for controlling fire spread must be readily available.
- Ensure the fire is completely out and cold to the touch before leaving.
The Fire Marshal's Office reminds residents that although the burn ban is lifting, safety remains paramount. Always check current fire danger levels and follow all safety regulations before burning.
